Dayā dharmasya mūlam
Compassion is the root of dharma.
— Mahabharata, Shanti Parva
Dialysis is a life-saving modality for patients with advanced kidney disease, yet access remains limited for many across India. The cost of ongoing treatment—typically three sessions per week—can be overwhelming, especially for families with limited means. Studies estimate that up to 60–70% of patients in India are unable to continue dialysis due to financial constraints, with affordability being one of the most common reasons for dropout and mortality among dialysis patients (Jha et al., The Lancet, 2013). At the Renuka Foundation, we believe that no one should be denied essential care because of their circumstances.
In line with this belief, we are currently sponsoring the dialysis treatment of one patient for an entire year, covering the full cost of three weekly sessions. This is a small but meaningful step toward bridging the gap between need and access. Our vision is to grow from one to many—to support additional patients over time, and to explore projects that improve dialysis experiences and infrastructure more broadly. This effort is personal, purposeful, and deeply rooted in the values of care, dignity, and service that our foundation was built on.
“My family and I were struggling to pay for my dialysis three times a week and to buy the medicines I needed. We had to borrow and beg to cover these expenses, and we ended up taking many loans at high interest rates to pay hospital bills and lab tests.”
